Lisa Barger Have a Well? Test It.
A new recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics urges families who drink well water to have their well tested annually for contamination like nitrates and bacteria.
They especially stress the need to test for families with newborns. One particularly troublesome contaminate is nitrate. Young infants don’t develop the ability to break nitrates down in their bodies until they’re at least 3 years old.
The Academy also recommends you test your well water before bringing home a new baby, if you have structural damage to your property or have construction going on. They issue this statement in the June 2009 issue of the journal Pediatrics.
