Is Crohn's Caused By Candida?

“Is it true that Crohn’s disease is caused by [Candida albicans]?”

No, it’s not. Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune disease and while certain drugs and foods are associated with increased flare-ups, legitimate experts tell us that there’s probably nothing you can do to “give” yourself Crohn’s. And that includes having yeast infections.

What’s an “autoimmune” disease? It’s a condition in which the body’s immune system begins to attack the body’s own tissues. Why the immune system acts this way is something we just don’t understand but rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and eczema are all examples of autoimmune disorders.

The idea that certain germs cause Crohn’s disease has been circulating around the internet for some time. It got a big boost from books like David Klein’s book Self Healing Colitis & Crohn’s, 2nd Edition but the truth is, most experts believe he’s wrong.

The fact is, Candida infections can be a problem for Crohn’s patients but they aren’t the cause of Crohn’s. Exactly the opposite is true—the presence of Crohn’s weakens the lining of the digestive tract, making it easier for germs like Candida to set up shop.

Now, obviously, the only person who should be giving you medical advice is your own doctor so skip those self-help web sites that don’t even make their users give real names and get your medical advice from someone you can hold accountable—your own physician.
