My earliest memory of writing is of being four years old and sitting on the back stoop of my grandparents' tiny little cottage of a home, regaling my grandfather with my tale of a little girl who was blown into an apple tree by a tornado and had to find a way out of the tree without scuffing her freshly polished Mary Jane's before church. When your grandmother tells you not to scuff your shoes or get your Sunday dress dirty, you listen.
